On Friday, January 12, 2024, and Sunday, January 14, 2024, Temple Shalom of Aberdeen and New Light Baptist Community Church of Cliffwood Beach continued their tradition of honoring and supporting the great works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This will marked the 18th year (also known as ‘chai,’ the Hebrew word for life) of this interfaith program.
The two religious organizations recognize the legacy of Dr. King as they work together to combat racism and antisemitism, creating a community filled with equality and love for all. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who was born on January 15, 1929, and killed on April 4, 1968, fought for justice through peaceful protest. This year, it was even more important and relevant to highlight the teachings of Dr. King, such as loving others, not pre-judging people because they are different, serving others, and standing up for what is right. As said by Dr. King’s daughter, Bernice, on October 12, 2023, “Hate begets hate; violence begets violence; toughness begets a greater toughness. We must meet the forces of hate with the power of love.”
