Derek J. Penslar, the William Lee Frost Professor of Jewish History at Harvard University, recently presented a fascinating lecture at Rutgers about his new book, Zionism: An Emotional State. His talk explored the history of the complex emotions that have propelled both proponents and opponents of this national movement. The resulting portrait of Zionism reconfigures how we understand Jewish identity amid continuing debates on the role of nationalism in the modern world.
Free and open to the public, the lecture, “Zionism: An Emotional State,” was held on September 20 at the Douglass Student Center on the Rutgers–New Brunswick campus. The talk was the Ruth and Alvin Rockoff Annual Lecture, presented by the Allen and Joan Bildner Center for the Study of Jewish Life at Rutgers University.
