Dr. Milton Heumann. Distinguished Professor of Political Science and pre-law adviser at Rutgers University, will speak about the Supreme Court on Sunday, March 2, at 11 a.m. at Congregation Neve Shalom in Metuchen. Heumann, who formerly served as chair of the university’s political science department, has been teaching at Rutgers since 1981. Prior to that he was a Guggenheim Fellow at Yale Law School and for years afterward was an occasional visiting professor at Yale Law. Heumann’s principal research has been in the area of legal process, criminal justice and civil liberties. More recently, he has written extensively in the area of the “right to privacy.” Currently, Heumann is working with several students, a former graduate student and an attorney on a study of judicial “creative sentences.” He is the author of many books and papers in his field of expertise.

A memorial shloshim–marking 30 days since his death–will be held Tuesday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. for Rabbi Levi Wolosow, the adult education director at the Chabad of Western Monmouth County in Manalapan, who died suddenly on Feb. 3 at the age of 43 while on a ski trip with his family in the Poconos.
Wolosow, who served the community for 18 years, was known for his many programs and events, particularly for his Project Rosh, a High Holiday service drawing as many as 500 people who didn’t want to attend traditional synagogue services. He left behind his pregnant wife, Chanele, and eight children, including two children from the community who were suddenly orphaned. Registration is required. Go to chabadwmc.com.

Congregation Agudath Achim-Freehold Jewish Center will host lawyer and journalist Matthew Hausman as scholar-in-residence during its celebration of Shabbat Across America, March 7-8. His topic will be One People, One Heart: Survival and Success of the Jewish People. A trial lawyer with offices in Trumbull, Conn., Hausman’s work appears in Arutz-Sheva/Israel National News and elsewhere. He comes from a family with traditional religious and Revisionist Zionist roots, an ideology that advocated for Jewish sovereignty over what they considered historical Eretz Yisrael encompassing both sides of the Jordan River.
Services begin Friday at 6:15 p.m. to be followed by Shabbat dinner and presentation. Cost for dinner is $25 for non-members and $20 for members. Hausman will speak again Saturday after services and kiddush luncheon, which begin at 9 a.m. There will be a Havdalah ceremony followed by a reception at 7:15 p.m. with Hausman.

Nikki Schreiber, author of the book, “Humans of Judaism,” will appear as guest speaker at the Highland Park Conservative Temple-Congregation Anshe Emeth on Tuesday, March 11 at 7 p.m. at a joint meeting of the synagogue’s Sisterhood and Raritan Valley Chapter of Hadassah. The book contains 300 uplifting stories of Jewish people from around the world. The program will also feature Highland Park resident Rivka Kaplow, whose family story about fleeing pogroms in Iraq and arrival in pre-state Israel is among those included in the book. Kaplow is currently researching her family’s history and their work in helping to build the current state of Israel.
Schreiber, who also grew up in Highland Park, will speak about how her book project began and how it became popular on social media outlets. It will be available for sale after the program.
