Learn more about the lone soldiers serving to defend Israel and the young women performing national service on Sunday, Oct. 27, at noon at Temple B’nai Shalom in East Brunswick. Lone soldiers are from the United States and   other countries who have immigrated to Israel to serve in the IDF,  while the women are known as b’not sheirut. Both these groups have found a home away from home at the Michael Levin Lone Soldier Center, named after the suburban Philadelphia native who died at age 22 in the Second Lebanon War  in 2006.

At the program a lone soldier and a b’not sheirut will speak via Zoom about their lives and the center, answer questions and converse with those attending. The program is free and includes brunch, but an RSVP is required at rosalieboyarsky@gmail.com. All ages are encouraged to attend. For those unable to come in person a Zoom link will be provided upon registration.

Adam Mansbach, author of “The Golem of Brooklyn,” will speak at Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple in New Brunswick on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 10:30 a.m. as part of the Renee Reiss & Anita Kaplan Jewish Identity in Literature Series. His book is described as an “epic romp through Jewish history and the American present that wrestles with the deepest questions of our humanity—the conflicts between faith and skepticism, tribalism and interdependence, and vengeance and healing.”

Mansbach is a novelist, screenwriter, cultural critic, and humorist. Among his other books is the New York Times bestseller “Go the F@ck to Sleep,” which has been translated into 40 languages, named Time Magazine’s 2011 “Thing of the Year,” and sold over three million copies worldwide. Among his other novels is “The End of the Jews.”

His debut screenplay for the 2016 Netflix original Barry was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and an NAACP Image Award. A former New Voices Professor of Fiction at Rutgers University, Mansbach’s work has appeared in many leading publications and his next feature film is Super High, a stoner superhero comedy starring Andy Samberg, Craig Robinson and Common.

The program is free. For information call (732) 545-6484 or aemt.net
