The 2024 hurricane season set records and was devastating to many communities, especially in Florida and North Carolina. Temple Shalom of Aberdeen, which continuously shows its commitment to Tikkun Olam, did so again by supporting NECHAMA in raising funds and providing “boots on the ground” in response to these disasters. NECHAMA – Jewish Response to Disaster, offers sustained direct services in the U.S. following the onset of a hurricane, tornado, flood, or other natural disaster.
Temple Shalom member Rachel L. MacAulay joined NECHAMA this fall on a deployment to hard-struck Western NC to help clean out mud-laden and mold-riddled homes, raise funds, and even cook/serve meals at a World Central Kitchen affiliate partner. Rachel has been volunteering with NECHAMA since 2017, and this was her third physical deployment. She was publicly recognized by NECHAMA for her commitment and many contributions.
Sharing her perspective on this recent deployment, Rachel spoke of the importance of letting people know that they are not alone and that others are here to help, and also of her Jewish identity. Oftentimes, the introduction to NECHAMA is also the first time these folks are meeting Jewish people. When we, as Jews, support people during the most despairing and desperate point in their lives, it not only helps lift them up and get them resettled in their communities, but also educates them that we are not strangers.
